Main Purpose of Job

This is a varied and challenging role that will typically be complex, covering a range of issues where the successful candidate will need to be pro-active in anticipating issues and understanding underlying causes before providing solutions. They will need to be flexible and have the ability to tailor style to varying audiences and interlocutors.

The FCDO and other government departments that operate overseas, rely on international support in order to be able to operate effectively, both in normal conditions and in crisis. The underlying solution is classed as Critical National Infrastructure.

The purpose of the role is to manage the service provided by the Overseas IT Support Network and to agree and plan its transformation to a service fit for future operational requirements. This scope includes the service provided by suppliers / partners and the work of IT Support Officers at post.

Job description

Roles and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Transformation of the overseas service support network.
  • Supporting Information and Digital Directorate’s (IDD) wider transformation.
  • Leading on overseas network resourcing, guidance and management.
  • Supplier management for the services delivered overseas across multiple security tiers.
  • Monitoring Locally Managed IT Systems and identifying operational risk and mitigation.
  • Liaising with departments on the status of the service as Critical National Infrastructure.
  • Defining future service requirements and agreeing a programme of change.
  • Commissioning and acting as Senior Reporting Officer for discrete projects.
  • Monitoring service quality and reporting regularly, identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Understanding the way that the service is delivered by other Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and identifying opportunities.
  • Providing expertise and guidance including to projects and programmes, both in the FCDO and other government departments.
  • Maintaining and evolving policy, guidance and training.
  • Monitoring and reporting on Locally Managed IT and identifying opportunities to reduce work operational risk.
  • Communicating on internal social media.
  • Managing the delivery of the Overseas Support service, defining the future approach, working with key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Conveying detailed advice and information (who may have a limited understanding) and agreeing strategic and tactical plans with them.

You must be a British Citizen at the time of application and, if invited to interview, you will need to bring your British Passport with you.

This role requires you to attain Developed Vetting (DV) security clearance.

At least one year of this must have been a consecutive twelve-month period. Serving overseas with HM Forces, in some other official capacity as a representative of Her Majesty’s Government, or having lived overseas as a result of your parents’ or partner’s Government employment counts as UK residency for the purposes of security clearances.

It is essential in your application that you provide evidence and proven examples in each of the following Minimum Criteria, the Behaviours and the Technical question as far as you are able to do so. These responses will be further developed and discussed with those candidates invited for interview.
