How you'll make a difference

The Children and Young People’s Commissioning team have specific responsibility for the procurement and commissioning of a range of services for children and young people, including services for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). Joining this team you will be making a difference by helping to improve the provision of those services that are commissioned by the Council for children and young people living in South Gloucestershire.

As a Commissioning Officer you will build strong partnerships with social care, housing and health service providers commissioned by the Council to help improve the provision of care and support for people living in South Gloucestershire.

What will you be doing?

As part of the Children & Young People’s commissioning team you will work with colleagues across Children’s Social Care and Preventative Services to put in place a variety of services that support children, young people and their families. We are involved in designing those services with stakeholders, undertaking negotiations with providers, securing placements for young people, issuing contracts and agreements, and managing those contracts and relationships with providers in both the voluntary and commercial sector.

The services will generally already have been procured and the role of the Commissioning Officer working in the Children’s Placements Team is to co-ordinate and administer the start of the service by liaising with care providers and securing the most appropriate placements for Children and Young People which are a best and most cost-effective match.

  • You will be working with providers who are commissioned by the Council to provide support to children, young people and their families.
  • You will be monitoring contracts to ensure services are delivered and are meeting outcomes and processing invoices.
  • You will be working in partnership with a wide range of partners so that we meet our strategic commitments
  • Importantly, you will work in co-production with colleagues, partners, people who use services and their families and carers to ensure the services we commission meet outcomes
  • You will support the quality assurance of the services we commission.
  • You will also be responsible for the supervision of 1 part time Assistant Commissioning Officer.

What we need from you

  • You will have relevant knowledge and experience of working in an organisation that commissions and contracts in social care or similar services and able to demonstrate a flexible approach to working across different areas.
  • You will need excellent interpersonal skills to establish a positive relationship with a wide variety of stakeholders’ contacts and customers.
  • You will have demonstrable experience of meeting service standards, targets and deadlines, be well organised with excellent time management skills and able to manage competing demands.
  • Desirably, you’ll have a degree or professional qualification in social care, health care or business studies
