The Mechanical Metrology and Technical Engineering Group (MMTE) is part of the Engineering Technology Centre (ETC) within the Technology Department at STFC's Daresbury Laboratory. We provide mechanical engineering expertise in the manufacture, build, installation and commissioning of complex experimental equipment, along with ongoing operational support and fault finding on STFC Particle accelerators (e.g. CLARA/FEBE) and within work packages for other departments and international scientific facilities such as ESS, CERN and FERMILAB.
We are currently looking for several engineering technicians to join our dynamic team working in a modern environment with access to first class training and an excellent work life balance.

About the roles
Within MMTE group there are several engineering teams working on some of the world’s most exciting and complex scientific facilities, these posts, for engineering technicians, will work within these teams. The roles are principally assigned to support project work including the assembly, build and installation of high-end technical systems and scientific equipment along with operational maintenance and breakdown support:
Your days will be varied consisting of actions such as:

  • Working across the full engineering life cycle from concept to commissioning
  • Perform mechanical installation, assembly and commissioning tasks
  • Basic use of machine tools, lathe, milling machine, pillar drill…
  • Attending team meetings, reporting on progress within your work package and to identifying any risks, issues or related problems.
  • Forming collaborative working relationships with subject experts across multiple disciplines seeking suitable advice when required
  • Working within and contribute to our BSI ISO9001quality system
  • Adding input to project/resource planning and scheduling
  • Working safely within STFC’s Health & Safety system and using own working knowledge of current HSE legislation & regulations

About you

  • You will have a broad understanding of engineering and hands-on mechanical experience. Knowledge/transferable skills in some specific areas of particle accelerator type technologies including: vacuum technology, cryogenics and clean room/low particulate control technology would be advantageous but not essential.
  • Qualifications:
  • A recognised Engineering Apprenticeship or demonstrable equivalent hands on experience in a relevant technical, engineering or scientific role. Any higher level qualifications for example ONC in engineering would again be advantageous.

Within this intake we will identify 2 candidates who will spend 2 years on our DUNE project and these posts will attract a higher annual allowance (up to £4000), to be considered for the DUNE project you will need to not only fulfil the below essential requirements, but also have demonstrable experience of working to and following precise technical procedures & the ability/ mindset to complete repetitive tasks to a continual high standard.

  • Demonstrable practical mechanical skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Attention to detail and working within precise tolerances
  • Strong documentation and recording skills
  • Experience of handling delicate equipment
  • The ability to read engineering drawings and interpret data
  • Good IT skills e.g. Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint, etc
  • Understanding and experience of implementing and applying relevant health and safety requirements in a science and engineering environment (e.g. risk assessments, operating procedures, COSHH assessments)
  • Commitment to ongoing training and professional development as required to fulfil the duties of the role

Desirable

  • Experience of operating workshop machine tools
  • Experience of working within an ISO9001 or similar quality environment
  • Ability to perform fine hand-soldering operations (preferably to IPC level)#
  • Safety qualification e.g. IOSH Managing Safety Certificate is again preferred but not essential
  • Experience of operating jib cranes
  • Experience of working in a manufacturing or production environment#
  • Experience of working at height (DUNE only)
