We have an exciting new opportunity for National Nature Reserve Partnership Officer based in the beautiful Lakes!
We are offering this role on a 2 year fixed term full time contract.


This Partnership Officer role will take ownership of the proposed Borrowdale NNR (National Nature Reserve) which will recognise and celebrate the very special `Atlantic` oak woodlands which, in England, are best exemplified in this valley. Declaration of the NNR is anticipated for autumn 2024. In this role you'll take ownership of the project plan, modify and update as and when needed. You'll be the catalyst who makes sure all necessary actions happen on time, including leading engagement with tenants.

What it's like to work here:North and West Lakes is the largest countryside portfolio within the National Trust, located in the Lake District National Park, World Heritage site. It comprises 33,000 hectares spread across 6 valleys and includes managing heritage coastline for partners. The portfolio stretches from Borrowdale in the east across to Buttermere, the Whitehaven coast, Ennerdale and the Wild Ennerdale partnership down to Wasdale, Eskdale and The Duddon valley.

Our landholding covers SSSI’s and SAC protection for Lakes, Commons, Atlantic oakwoods, lakeshores and heathlands. North and West Lakes comprises some of the most iconic and highly visited mountains - Scafell, Great Gable, Catbells and lakes – Derwentwater, Buttermere and Wast Water in the Lake District. As well as being home to the communities and tenants who work here, the area forges special memories for many of our visitors.

What you'll be doing:This role will involve close working with Natural England staff as well as a wide variety of NT employees and other external stakeholders.

The role holder will be required to:
  • Take ownership of the project plan
  • Organise steering group meetings, prepare agendas, and facilitate additional NE/NT liaison as required
  • Lead a steering group discussion on what the partners expect from the NNR declaration long-term. A name and clear vision for the NNR needs to be agreed upon too
  • The proposed NNR boundary needs to be checked in great detail and digitised boundaries matched with ownership/tenancy and Master map where appropriate
  • The NNR will require an approved Management Plan and the role will need to formulate this plan , starting with , using existing NT estate and woodland management plans
  • The role will deliver the engagement and communications with all stakeholders internally and externally with support from internal colleagues.

For this position, we’re looking for someone who has:
  • Strong people and influencing skills, enabling relationships internally and externally to be built and maintained
  • Ability to work as part of a diverse team
  • PC literate using MS software and other packages to intermediate level (GIS)
  • Experience of using maps
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills including some public presentation experience
  • Excellent organisational and planning skills
  • The ability to work well under pressure.
