We have an exciting opportunity for Principal Developer (Web) in our Digital and Technology Group (D&T).
This is a full- time opportunity, on a 12-month fixed term contract/internal move or temporary promotion basis. (This is a fixed term contract until 31/03/24). The role will be based in 10 South Colonnade, Canary Wharf London, E14 4PU or South Mimms, Hertfordshire. We are currently implementing a flexible, hybrid way of working, with a minimum of 4 days per month working on site to enable the collaboration and contact with partners and stakeholders needed to deliver MHRA business. Attendance on site is driven by business needs so depending on the nature of the role, this can flex up to 8 days a month, with the remainder of time worked either remotely or in the office. Some roles will need to be on site more regularly.
- The salary for this role is £67,158 - £72,888. A Digital Allowance of up to £20,000 per annum may be available for exceptional candidates based on our assessment of your skills and experience

The Digital and Technology Group (D&T) lies at the heart of the Agency and is responsible for making sure that our scientists, inspectors and all of our staff have the tools and data they need to deliver the very best services they can to improve outcomes for patients and the general public. The Group was essential in the race to approve COIVD vaccines in 2020 and in supporting the UK to set up its own medicines and devices approvals systems to become a sovereign regulator. The work we do matters!
The Technology & Service Operations function is responsible for managing the existing IT infrastructure including both software and hardware, databases and other technology platforms; leading the maintenance of applications directly and through management of outsourced service delivery providers, including the Agency IT and helpdesk; and for the development and QA of and transition to new software and hardware infrastructure.
What’s the role?
The Principal Developer (Web) will work in cross-functional product squads on the design and development of creating cloud native (Azure), JavaScript based microservices (node.js) and front end (react) utilising agile (SAFe), paired programming, Test Driven Development (TDD) and DevOps.
You will work with the internal team and lead the development team to develop and maintain high-performance, scalable solutions
The post holder will develop capability and encourage collaboration and will identify, test and champion the adoption of emerging technologies.
You will play a leading engineering role within the department and will be tasked with the planning, management, execution, and implementation of site/software projects, inclusive of the day-to-day project management, scope management, issue and risk management.
You will collaborate and work with a diverse supplier base and ensure they deliver effectively against our Digital goals and follow the Government Digital Services (GDS) Service Standard.
Who are we looking for?
The successful candidate will have significant experience in a similar environment and will have solid JavaScript coding skills, experience of TDD/BDD (jest, enzyme, cucumber, gherkin), be collaborative (Jira, Confluence, GitHub) and keen to roll up your sleeves.
You will have proven experience of collaborating with others to review specifications and use these agreed specifications to design, code, test and document programs or scripts of medium-to-high complexity, using the right standards and tools.
You will have a track record of prioritising and defining approaches to understand the user story, guiding others and be highly skilled in prototyping, programming, and building software.
