Archive Cataloguer Job at University of Glasgow
Job Purpose
To enhance the management of Archive and Special Collections (ASC)'s archive collections, particularly the Scottish Business Archive and Scottish Theatre Archive.
To process archive collections to professional standards, enabling discovery, access, and preservation.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Applying professional knowledge and ASC collections development policies and procedures, make appraisal recommendations on archive collections and action these recommendations with colleagues' agreement.
- Using professional expertise and following local descriptive standards, develop descriptive metadata for archive collections for management within ASC's collection management system (EMu).
- Ensure that accurate records of collections management information (e.g. acquisition, intellectual property rights, processing activities, and storage) are maintained within ASC's collection management systems.
- Publicise and promote newly processed and available collections to researchers through ASC's online channels.
- Promote the long-term preservation of archive collections by working with the Collections Management Team, highlighting preservation concerns, and undertaking repackaging and labelling of archive collections.
- Digitise selected items from archive collections and manage the transfer of the digital surrogate and relevant metadata into ASC's collection management system in line with ASC procedures.
- Support the delivery of ASC's high quality Engagement Services, particularly through processing remote enquiries and supervising reading room services.
- Support ASC's wide-ranging activities, assisting with ad hoc requests as and when required.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential:
A1 Holder of an Archives & Records Association (Society of Archivists) approved postgraduate qualification in Archives & Records Management
Desirable:
B1 An understanding of the history of business and / or theatre

C1 Ability to effectively manage and organise own workload to meet deadlines
C2 Excellent verbal and written communication skills
C3 Ability to pay attention to detail and work with accuracy
C4 Well-developed analytical skills and capacity for problem-solving
C5 Good team-working skills
C6 Proficient IT skills, particularly with MS Excel
C7 Excellent manual handling skills
Experience
Essential:
E1 Relevant practical experience of the arrangement and description of archive collections
E2 Experience with the application of current appraisal methodologies
E3 Relevant practical experience in the digitisation of heritage collections
E4 Experience using online channels (organisational website / discovery systems / social media) for promotional activities or information / knowledge exchange
Desirable:
F1 Experience with EMu collection management system
F2 Experience of working in a customer-facing role
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 5, £23,715 - £27,929 per annum.
This post is full time and fixed term for up to 6 months
