Biomedical Scientist / Healthcare Practitioner x4 Job at UK Health Security Agency
This is an exciting opportunity to join the largest Virology departments in England. The Virology department forms part of The Manchester Medical Microbiology Partnership (MMMP), which is a collaboration between Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) and UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). The laboratory therefore provides both a clinical Virology service and a public health Virology service to the North-West of England and beyond.
We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated Healthcare Scientist Practitioner. The post holder will work as part of the laboratory team, providing a high level of microbiological analysis to provide patients with the highest level of diagnosis and treatment. The post holder will be expected to work towards their IBMS registration Portfolio once in post.
The laboratory is accredited by UKAS (ISO15189 standard)
We actively encourage CPD activities.
The department requires staff to support the department in delivering a comprehensive Virology service over 7 days. Staff may be required to work a variety of shifts, including weekends, throughout the 24-hour period if appropriate to the post
Applications from HCPC state registered Biomedical Scientists are preferred BUT NOT essential. Enthusiastic individuals with Biomedical or other scientific degrees will also be given consideration.
You will be working as part of the laboratory team and will be expected to rotate through various managed units within Microbiology, but specifically in support of testing for COVID-19 and COVID-19 genomic sequencing, including RNA extraction of positive COVID-19 samples, sample processing for sequencing, plus other genomic work duties as appropriate.
The post holder would be expected to assist in any UKHSA co-ordinated response or activity of a national/international nature, e.g. Bioterrorism incident or a major disease e.g. SARS, H5N1 influenza, Covid19, Enteric disease outbreak etc.
Applications from HCPC state registered Biomedical Scientists are preferred BUT NOT essential. Enthusiastic individuals with Biomedical or other scientific degrees will also be given consideration.
The Virology delivered from the Manchester Royal Infirmary site employs over 100 staff and has a workload of approximately 1million specimens per year or 6,500 specimens per day. The department embraces all aspects of a modern clinical virology service combining state of the art laboratory automation with some more traditional methods.
It has a friendly, atmosphere with good team spirit and offers the opportunity for you to develop personally and professionally. The department is a designated IBMS training
The post holder would be expected to assist in any PHE co-ordinated response or activity of a national/international nature, e.g. Bioterrorism incident or a major disease e.g. SARS, H5N1 influenza, Covid19, Enteric disease outbreak etc.
The successful candidate must be flexible, able to work in a team and use their own initiative.
Each of the sites operates a 7-day working week and the applicant will be required to work a maximum of 37.5 hours per week. Each site delivers a 24-hour service. The successful candidate will be required to work defined shifts, as required.

New entrants to the Civil Service are expected to start on the minimum of the pay band.
The internal roles rules apply to existing Civil Servants, i.e., level transfers move on current salary or the pay range minimum, transfers on promotion move to new pay range minimum or receive 10% increase. Either case is determined by whichever is the highest.

Flexible Working:
UKHSA offers hybrid working for its employees – this means that whilst the role will be based in one of our UKHSA offices, there will be opportunities for an element of working from home. The balance between home and workplace working is to be agreed with the line manager, determined primarily by business need and in line with departmental policy. Some business travel will be required to other UKHSA offices. Business travel between base location and any other UKHSA offices will be covered under the UKHSA Travel and Expenses policy. Please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas. Relocation expenses are not available.
