This is a great opportunity to join our team as a Field Interviewer working for the Office for National Statistics. As a Field Interviewer carrying out official surveys you will be helping to inform Government about the state of the nation.
Your role will be a combination of field visits to addresses to encourage households to complete our surveys, carrying out surveys in their homes and completing phone interviews.
This role comes with flexible working hours that we hope will meet your needs as well as ours. You will be employed on either a 1144 or 1560 hours annualised contract which is broadly equivalent to 22 or 30 hours work per week.
To ensure that we reach respondents, interviews will need to be conducted between the hours of 09:00 – 20:00. Hours must be split evenly across mornings,
afternoons, and evenings, with flexibility to work on occasional Saturdays if required.
Mornings - 09:00 – 13:00,
Afternoons - 13:00 – 17:00
Evenings - 17:00 – 20:00
There is potential for admin and travel time outside of these hours.
What we are we looking for?
We are looking for individuals who have a friendly, outgoing personality and the confidence to approach and converse with a wide selection of people either via phone or face to face. You will need to have excellent communication skills to be the face of ONS and, where needed, to persuade any reluctant member of the public to take part in our surveys and to be interviewed.
You will also be responsible for planning, organizing and managing your own work loads, we will provide full training and support to help you with this.
Person specification
- Be able to transport and carry equipment such a laptop and survey materials with you, on occasion walk between addresses and navigate stairs when out in the field.
- Work approximately within 40 miles from the advertised position.
- Interviews will need to be conducted between the hours of 09:00 – 20:00. Hours will need to be split evenly across mornings, afternoons, and evenings, with flexibility to work on occasional Saturdays if required.
- Be proficient in the use of a laptop and a smartphone
- To be self-disciplined, self-motivated and happy to work without supervision.
- Have excellent verbal communication skills and enjoy meeting and talking to people.

Assessment at application stage will be based on your work history, skills and experience and personal statement. Your application should be tailored to demonstrate any skills, knowledge and experience that are relevant to the content of the role.
In your personal statement you are required to answer the question below using up to 250 words.

In cases where there is a high number of applications the sift pass mark may be adjusted and candidates will be invited to interview in merit order, i.e., those scoring the highest.
Should you be invited to interview, you will be assessed using various assessment techniques aligned to the Civil Service Success Profiles, where you'll be assessed against all the behaviours outlined in the advert as well as against the technical areas listed in the advert.
We will assess you against the following behaviours during the selection process:

There will also be a technical question on your ability to use technology.

If your application is successful, you will be invited to attend a video interview lasting between 30 - 45 minutes.
At interview, you will be assessed on your suitability for the role by providing us with evidence in the interview to support what you have included in your application.
You should make time to familiarise yourself with the required behaviours before interview and have any questions that you may wish to ask prepared.
If you are applying for more than one currently advertised vacancy as a Field Interviewer, if you are selected to be interviewed, you will only be interviewed for the Field interviewer role once. If you are successful. you may be offered your preferred area.
Essential Requirements
Nationality & Immigration:
- Candidates will be subject to UK immigration requirements as well as Civil Service eligibility rules.
- Disclosure and Barring Service Check: Successful candidates must pass a disclosure and barring security check. If you have resided outside of the UK for more than six months during the last 3 years, you will also need to obtain security records check from the relevant country.
- Full valid UK Driving License (inclusive of the rights of EU Nationals).
- Full use of a car for work purposes including business use (if offered a post).
- Proof of Identity
- Have a broadband internet connection at your home address prior to taking up an offer of employment
