Job summary

The newly formed Sexually Transmitted Infections Reference Laboratory are looking to recruit a well-motivated, enthusiastic individual to work in a busy laboratory environment. The post-holder must be pro-active, reliable and professional at all times. Duties will include working as part of a team within the STI reference laboratory to support the management and development of specialist and reference services, delivery of national antimicrobial surveillance programmes, and research into characterisation of and antimicrobial resistance in bacterial STIs.

Job description

This is a laboratory based role.

  • process specimens, sub culture, and perform nucleic acid extractions, run controls and IQC samples according to given protocols as required following training.
  • Carry out laboratory testing, including molecular techniques such as NA extraction, PCR (including real-time PCR) and DNA sequencing and standard microbiological procedures e.g Gram’s stain
  • Read and record test results where there are clear positive and negative results
  • Monitor equipment, notifying senior staff where there are discrepancies
  • Organise an inventory for maintenance of stocks and solutions
  • Contribute to the provision of a reference service for microbiological samples requiring up to Containment level 2 proficiency.
  • Carry out sample tracking; analysis and archiving of specimens received
  • Receive, prepare, or dispense media with appropriate storage.
  • Ordering of consumables and the preparation of media, reagents and solutions
  • Responsible for the reading of less complex test results and entry of results onto the LIMS, live system where no interpretation of results is required
  • Ensure rooms are kept clean, tidy and well stocked and that equipment is monitored and maintained
  • Ensure discard waste is managed in a timely manner and stored & disposed of safely in accordance with SOPs, and agreed safety standards
  • To answer the telephone and deal with enquiries as appropriate
  • To take part in and contribute to laboratory meetings

Selection process details

Eligibility Criteria

Open to all external applicants (anyone) from outside the Civil Service (including by definition internal applicants).

Grade and Salary

New entrants to the Civil Service are expected to start on the minimum of the pay band.

The internal roles rules apply to existing Civil Servants, i.e. level transfers move on current salary or the pay range minimum, transfers on promotion move to new pay range minimum or receive 10% increase.

Either case is determined by whichever is the highest.

Security Clearance Level Requirement:

Successful candidates must pass a disclosure and barring security check.

Successful candidates must meet the security requirements before they can be appointed. The level of security needed is Basic Personnel Security Standard.
