We work with our communities to tell the remarkable story of Sheffield and its people, and celebrate its reputation for excellence in art, craft, making and innovation. Together with local, regional and national partners, we showcase home-grown creative talent and bring outstanding cultural experiences to the city.

We’re a people-focused museums service that strives to represent, celebrate, and inspire the communities we serve and visitors to the city alike. We believe our staff team is our greatest asset; each of our colleagues plays an important role in enabling the city’s museums to thrive and helping audiences to find meaningful connections with the collections we care for and the stories they tell.

As a valued member of the team, you’ll get 30 days annual leave plus bank holidays (pro rata if part time) and wellbeing support through our employee assistance programme. We also promote a flexible working culture.

About the Role

Help us to run, maintain and explain Shepherd Wheel and the River Don Engine!

We are seeking an enthusiastic person with an engineering skills background and a real interest in conserving Sheffield’s industrial heritage. You will be responsible for ensuring the safe running of the River Don Engine at Kelham Island Museum and for the safe operation of the Shepherd Wheel Workshop, working alongside Friends of the Porter Valley volunteers to engage with visitors to interpret the Shepherd Wheel site.

Working on your own and as part of a small team, this is a great opportunity to help conserve and preserve Sheffield’s industrial collection.

This is a rare opportunity for a technician with an enthusiasm to learn new skills, an outgoing personality and a positive attitude towards health and safety best practice.

About You

The successful candidate will ideally have:

  • experience working in an engineering environment

  • experience in conservation, restoration and maintenance of machinery/vehicles

  • ability to easily and effectively engage with visitors to share specialist information

  • knowledge of conservation and restoration techniques

  • a willingness to work flexibly as part of a team

  • practical hands-on maintenance skills

Working Pattern

The Museum Technician will work alternate weekends at Kelham Island Museum and Shepherd Wheel Workshop. The hours will vary between 4.5 and 7.75 hours per day depending on the site and season.

The rota provides that you have 1 weekend per month off.

The additional hours will be worked on weekdays at either Kelham Island Museum or Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet. This will usually be the third week in any month to align with engine maintenance day at Kelham Island Museum.

Flexibility will be needed at times in line with business needs. The worked hours of the role add up to 45.75hrs per calendar month.
