Debt & Benefit Adviser - Macmillan Projet Job at Citizens Advice Plymouth

Citizens Advice Plymouth Plymouth

Salary scale: £22,036.92 to £25,082.66 per annum
Hours: Full-time, 37 hours per week.
Deadline for applications: 16th January 2023 at 9am

About this role:

As a Debt & Benefits Adviser you’ll work to help clients solve the problems they face. This includes looking at the best options to support people with their debt, help them to claim the benefits they’re entitled to, and maximise their income as far as possible.

This role is working on our Macmillan Cancer Support project. Macmillan Cancer Support is a charity that works with different partners to provide services for people living with cancer at every stage of their cancer experience. This includes a range of services that focus on providing money and welfare rights advice. This project will aim to deliver these services to patients in the local area.

You will provide services such as benefits information, signposting, self-help and advice through different ways, including on the phone, through digital channels such as webchat, and face to face, with an emphasis on outreach work at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth. Part of the role will also involve liaising and networking with external partners such as hospital working groups in order to develop the outreach service for clients.

You will be exploring people’s situations and providing strategies for their debt issues, as well as following up and giving practical support where appropriate. It can sometimes be a challenging role, but you will be provided with accredited training for advice, and full support including debriefs with your manager.

We are an approachable and supportive team, working in a rewarding environment and aim to provide the best possible service to people across the City of Plymouth and beyond.

This role is based full-time in our Plymouth City Centre office and outreach including Derriford Hospital.

About you:

You’ll be passionate about working with people to find solutions to the problems they’re facing. You will be open-minded, approachable and non-judgmental.

Advisers need to be resilient and able to manage face-to-face and phone conversations well, communicating in a clear and empathetic way. These appointments can sometimes be emotional, as you will be working with people living with cancer. You’ll be able to write case notes up accurately and efficiently and competently use a range of Office 365 programs and keep databases up to date accurately.

You will have good prioritisation and time management skills to be able to work efficiently as part of a team to reach as many clients as possible as quickly as possible and be able to adapt well to changing priorities.

The ideal candidate will have excellent money advice skills, some knowledge of the current benefits systems and up to date knowledge and understanding of welfare reform. Previous money advice work is desirable, but not essential as full training will be provided.
