To provide corporate professional leadership and support to the Nursing, Midwifery & AHP workforce and Professional Practice, to develop clinical practice in line with the Trust’s Nursing & Midwifery & AHP Strategy, Service Improvement agenda, Clinical Governance Development Plan and Modernising NHS workforce Agenda.

To co-ordinate the development of professional practice and the workforce ensure nursing, midwifery & AHP staff (Trust wide) have the skills and education to provide safe and effective patient centred care.

  • Facilitate nurses, midwives & AHP in developing patient centred and innovative practice across the integrated Trust, taking a placed based approach.
  • Lead on specific professional practice development projects as identified by the Head of Professional Education.
  • Work closely with the divisions and corporate teams in the development and implementation of initiatives to enhance staff and patent
  • Ensure that the objectives detailed in the nursing, midwifery AHP strategy are delivered within the Professional Practice
  • Lead in developing, maintaining and implementing competency-based frameworks for all areas of clinical practice, across organisational boundaries.

On-Call

Please note that senior positions (AFC band 8A or above) may be expected to participate in an on-call rota, if the role is predominantly operational.

  • Lead in developing, maintaining and implementing a competency based framework for all areas of clinical practice, across organisational boundaries.
  • Co-ordinate, engage and promote lessons learned and changes in practice identified through, concise investigations, observation of care, complaints, PALS contacts and feedback from patient
  • Act in accordance with the Codes of Professional Conduct, specific to professional registration.
  • Work closely with the training department to ensure mandatory training and other training provision meets the identified professional development needs of nurses, midwives & AHPs.
  • Ensure that systems are developed and maintained to meet the requirements of NMC & HCPC standards for practice
  • Act as an expert resource to pre-registration & post registration students, mentors, Learning Environment Managers, Ward Sisters/Charge Nurses, Matrons and Heads of Nursing / Midwifery & AHPs.
  • Represent the Head of Professional Education at professional meetings in their absence.
  • Contribute to the development of business plans to develop services and the workforce.
  • Work with divisions and service leads across acute, community and integrated services to identify and address opportunities for shared learning resulting from incidents and
  • Maintain effective communication links with Matrons, Learning Environment Managers, Specialist Nurses, Clinicians and other divisional and department teams, as

  • Contribute in the development and support in the implementation of the Nursing, Midwifery and AHP strategy.
  • Undertake risk assessments & develop actions plans to mitigate risk in relation to professional practice issues.
  • Support the Deputy Chief Nurse and Deputy Chief Pharmacist for governance in implementing key aspects of the NMP lead role, including information and communication of NMP practice, clinical governance, coordinating and developing training and systems to support CPD.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the Recruitment and Retention Pipeline for Nursing and ODP.
