Hydrogeologist (Technical Specialist) Job at Environment Agency
We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Hydrogeologist to join the East Anglian Groundwater & Contaminated Land Team.
The role will focus on protecting and enhancing the quality and sustainable use of our water resources. Our water resources are vital to the ecological health of our environment and are equally vital economically and socially, utilised for public water supply, agriculture and industry.
This role contributes to ensuring our water resources are managed sustainably by helping to maintain a balance between abstraction the needs of the environment.
The successful candidate will play an essential role in safeguarding East Anglia’s groundwater for future generations. The hydrogeologist will work closely with internal and external customers across a range of hydrogeological problems.
Using a variety of tools and experience, the specialist will help solve complex hydrogeological problems and provide robust technical advice. The diverse range of work makes this an exciting opportunity to apply hydrogeological knowledge across a range of water resources and water quality issues.
Main duties include:
The Environment Agency take part in incident response. Our new Inclusive Incident Management Policy has been developed to support all new starters to find an incident role to suit their individual needs and circumstances. Full training will be provided.

- Undertaking and reviewing Hydrogeological Risk Assessments.
- Providing specialist technical guidance on complex hydrogeological scenarios.
- Coaching and mentoring staff to develop their hydrogeological understanding.
- Working with others to deliver environmental outcomes.

The team
The Groundwater and Contaminated Land Team is multi-functional team focused on protecting both the quality and quantity of our groundwater resource. The team provides technical support to internal teams and external customers on a range of groundwater related issues including:
The team also provides technical input to enforcement cases and incident response activities where groundwater is at risk.
- Abstraction licencing
- Permitting
- Planning advice
- Catchment management
- Groundwater vulnerability
- Groundwater modelling

Experience/skills required
Essential:
You should hold a relevant geoscience or environmental degree and proven practical experience in the field of hydrogeology.
Experience of analysing and interpreting information informing decision making, using a variety of sources of data to help draw robust technical recommendations.
As a confident communicator you will be able to convey information and ideas easily to a range of audiences and have experience of coaching and mentoring on complex technical issues.
Demonstrate proven knowledge of groundwater protection and how this relates to a sustainable use of water resources.
The candidate must be proficient in using Geographical Information Systems and have experience of data handling, time and file management and excellent organisational skills.
It would be helpful, but not essential, if you had:
A post graduate degree in a subject such as hydrogeology.
A working knowledge of water resource legislation.
A Full UK driving licence.
Professional membership is strongly encouraged.
