The Defence School of Marine Engineering, HMS Sultan, is looking for Specialist Instructional Officers (Coppersmith/Pipeworker) to train our future Technicians and help them develop the skills needed to maintain the Royal Navy’s latest and next generation warships and submarines.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Please note that DSMARE is due to transfer to Navy Command within the period Nov 2024 to Nov 2025. This post may therefore be in scope for potential outsource under Project Selborne during this period.

Job description

Do you have the passion to impart your skills and knowledge onto future Royal Naval Engineering Technicians, if you do, we need you? The Defence School of Marine Engineering, HMS Sultan, is the largest military training establishment in Europe and is responsible for the training and development of military engineering personnel. The successful candidate will be working within the Allied Trades Marine Pipework Department alongside a small team of instructional staff. The training syllabus for the section is predetermined by the Royal Naval Training Authority and is designed to impart the skills/knowledge necessary for active service within the armed forces. The role of the successful candidate is to provide both initial and advanced marine pipework technical and theoretical training to adult trainees studying for their foundation degree.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week and, in addition to the basic salary listed, attracts a £6000 p.a. allowance.


Person specification

Candidates will have served a recognised apprenticeship or relevant alternative period of training in a marine pipework environment and have gained the appropriate ONC, City and Guilds (part III), BTEC, NVQ or an equivalent level qualification. Applicants who have completed a military engineering apprenticeship plus 5 Years practical experience within the specialisation will be deemed to meet the necessary requirements.
Candidates should have practical experience and knowledge of the following Coppersmith/pipe working techniques – production of template wires and scale drawings, operation of pipe bending machinery, Oxy-Acetylene & Propane equipment, Brazing (Silver Solder) and Soft Soldering, Basic Plumbing Skills.
A good understanding of Microsoft Office and its applications would be a distinct advantage.

Qualifications

Applicants should have served a recognised Coppersmith/Pipeworker apprenticeship within a marine engineering environment, possess the appropriate formal qualifications: ONC, City & Guilds (Part 3,) BTEC or equivalent, and have a minimum 5 years’ experience within the advertised discipline.
Candidates who have completed an equivalent military engineering apprenticeship and have a minimum 5 years technical experience will be deemed to meet the necessary requirements.
A good understanding of Microsoft Office and its applications.

Selection process details

The selection process will include a practical test to assess appropriate skill levels, a multi choice theory exam to assess subject matter knowledge, a short (15 mins) presentation on a subject relative to the post advertised, and a formal interview.
The selection process and assessment is to be completed at HMS Sultan and normally requires a whole working day to accomplish.
